On 8-14-08 at 19:30 hrs. rescue alarm 4-4 was alerted for the motor vehicle collision at Route 97 and Route 144. Within seconds of the initial alert, the call was upgraded to entrapment. P-45, E-43, E-41, and U-4 quickly responded.
Due to a previous accident having Route 97 shut down because of wires in the roadway, crews utilized Route 144 instead of Interstate 70 to respond to the dispatched location. Crews were flagged down at Daisy Road and Route 144 and advised of the accident over the crest of a hill, approximately 3 miles west of the dispatched location.
On arrival the crews from Lisbon were faced with an accident scene that covered more area than a football field, with 5 critically injured patients needing immediate care. A sports car with 2 passengers had collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle carrying 4 passengers. The 2 patients in the sports car were not wearing seat belts, and were both ejected after impact.
Two passengers of the SUV had to be extricated from the vehicle before patient care could be given. Sadly the driver of the SUV was deceased upon arrival of emergency personnel.
The request was made for additional medic units, a medical strike team which brought the HCDFRS Special Operations team from Rivers Park with equipment for mass casualty situations and 4 helicopters to transport the injured to area trauma centers.
All crews on scene worked diligently to get the patients treated and transported to the trauma center within the Golden Hour.
Howard County Police are investigating the collision, and no charges have been filed as of this date. |
