Drive Safely in the Snow!

By EMS Sergeant Amanda Barnett

With predictions of significant snow accumulations with gusting winds and wind chills in the negative numbers, it is important to consider the risk of driving in dangerous conditions. The Maryland State Police have the following recommendations:

If you must travel, prepare!

1--Clean all windows for good visibility.

2--Brush your hood, trunk, and roof clear of snow.

3--Clean off headlights and turn signals so you can see and be seen.

4--Reduce speed and keep your headlights on low beam. High beams will cause glare and affect your ability to see.

5--Drive at a speed that matches the prevailing visibility, traffic, and road conditions.

6--Leave additional space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

7--Use safety belts. With restraints you have better vehicle control and you can react with more precision.

8--Accept the fact that the going may be slow and there will be delays and inconveniences. Resign yourself to a slower pace. Relax and concentrate on your driving. It's better to take more time and arrive safely. Use common sense.

Remember that the snow plows must have your cooperation in order to clear the snow from the road. They are able to more quickly clear the roads with less traffic-- stay home unless it is and emergency during and immediately after the storm. Allow a sufficient and safe working area-- do not follow the plow trucks more than 25 feet and do not pass them. There is a high chance that they may not see you, and the snow and salt being thrown can be dangerous to you and your vehicle.

If in doubt, stay home!
